Types of architecture.

I'm I have researched different types of architecture that is formed or related in some way to nature. As my project is based on nature I found this was a useful task which helped me influence my design sheets. The three types of architecture are: Organic, Metabolism and Biomimetic. These are further explained in my sketchbook. I like that my pages define and give examples of each type however, they look very basic and uninteresting to look at as I was hurrying to finish a deadline.

Jewellers research.

For the jewellery workshop, our tutor suggested that we research different jewellers that use the same techniques that we use in the workshop. Therefore, I studied Ornella Iannuzzi. She is a unique jeweller that uses the same methods to create powerful accessories. I love the way her pieces look ut I will not be using her as an influence as her work is too complex for a beginner to use.
The second jeweller I researched was Harry Winston. Winston created a collection, The Nyc Collection, which was inspired by the iconic landmarks in New York. I like how he looked at architecture for inspiration for his collection, giving me the inspiration to look at structures my own work.

Design Sheet 2

For my second design sheet I included the interior as well as the exterior. I found an image on Pinterest that I used for inspiration on the presentation of my work. As my treehouse design only had two floors I also included the side and front view. I used two point perspective to draw each section of the house including furnishings, then using Gouache to paint the shaded areas of the design. For the background I mixed a blue gouache, however, I ran out of colour so had to mix some more three quarters of the way through. When the colours were overlapped they made a dark streak making the page look messy. To solve this I cut the sections of the treehouse out and bluetacked them to a freshly painted board. But again I ran out of paint so a small portion of the board is streaky. I tacked my designs to the board to over the streak, but I am still able to remove them and place them to a better painted board for my portfolio.

Jewellery Workshop 4/5

In the final session of the jewellery workshop I continued with the ring band. In the previous session I soldered two pieces of copper together to create the width of the ring band to portray the tree trunk. In the last session I used a ball point hammer to warp and manipulate the band, in some parts the band came apart where the solder hand not stuck but I left it like this as I felt it resembled a tree more in this form. I then clamped one end in a vice and used pliers to twist the band before using the hammer again to bend it around a treble to form the ring. I then used solder to stick on the treehouse, then placing it in the pickle to clean it. When I took the ring out of the pickle some of the copper had transferred onto brass treehouse so I used a file and wire wool to remove it.

Woodwork Workshop

For my portfolio I have decided to make a model of the treehouse I have designed. In the workshop I began by making a paper maquette of the design to start looking at measurements to build in. Once the paper maquette was build and I was happy with the measurements, I made a list of all the required measurements I would need, making sure to reduce the pieces for the rebates. I then drew these up onto pieces of wood and using a band saw cut them out.

Design Sheet 1

For my design sheets I merged architecture with the natural world and decided to design tree houses. For my first deign sheet I took inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright and the way he creates his design sheets. Using two point perspective I created a modern style treehouse, with large windows and a viewing platform. Then taking Frank Lloyd Wrights method, I used alcohol pens to add a suggestion of colour to the building. I then added trees and shrubbery into the background, this time using water colour to add a suggestion of colour. If I could redo this page I would have prepared the background more by giving it a quick colour wash as I feel it looks slightly bare and unfinished.

Mood boards 2

As I was unhappy about with the quality of my mood boards I redid them. I started by creating a generic treehouse mood board, deleting a range of different treehouse images. I them glued them to the page in a neat and organised format.

For my second moodpboard I looked more closely at the type of treehouse I wanted to design. As I chose to design a modern style treehouse, I researched more on this design. I found a few images on large square styled models and selected these for my board. I also looked at colour schemes. As I wanted the colour to be dark brown, i looked for fabrics of this colour, then placing them on the page.  I also printed off a photograph of a wood/forest setting to portray the environment of the treehouse.

Jewellery Workshop 3

In the third week of the jewellery workshop I began my final piece. I decided to create my design sheet onto a ring. I started by creating the treehouse part. I cut two piece of square wire using a saw, I then cut out a corner piece in the bigger of the two square sections. I then soldered the two pieces together and pickled them.
Soldering the two pieces together deemed more difficult that it appeared. As the pieces were so small and balanced on a very small section, it was difficult to place them together to solder them together. We tried various methods to stick them together, including using wire to wrap around the pieces to keep them together and using a selection of tweezers to keep them in position. The tweezer method worked the best.

Jewellery Workshop 2

In the second session of the jewellery workshop we began making rings. We first chose the material we wanted to work in, I chose silver. We measured the size that our ring would be by using a ring/finger gauge, then, using a hammer I fed my piece of silver over a mandrel, hammering it to create the curve. I then used a saw to cut off the excess silver. Using the soldering method we were shown in the previous session, I soldered the two ends off the ring together. When soldering the pieces together, the metal snapped and a piece broke off so I repeated the whole process again. When the ring was soldered together, I placed it in the pickle to clean it.

Jewellery Workshop

During the first jewellery workshop, we began by learning about all the different equipment pieces and tools that we would be using during the following workshops. We first went through all the different types of tools and what they would be used for, for example, different types of hammers, files and saws. We then went over the different metals we would be using: Brass, Copper and Silver. To end the session, we were taught the different processes in jewellery work. We started with annealing our metal, to heat the material to make it more flexible. Then to pickling the metal, to place the metal in an acid solution to clean the metal. At the end we were shown how to solder two pieces of metal together using flux and solder in a liquid solution together and the flux and solder separate.

Artist Research - Brian Sweet

For my second artist research page I studied Brian Sweet. As I began looking at landscape and landscape artists I found Sweets work and loved how he recreated farmland images. As I was unsure what media he worked in, I used watercolour in my paintings. I printed out a few images of his work and chose two to recreate. I then split these up across the page for a neat and ordered look. I like the way this page has worked but if I were to redo it, I would make the paintings bigger to fill the page more. I would also work in a different media such as Gouache to create a more flat look.

Artist Research - Gaudi

For my first artist Research page, I studied the architect Gaudi. After studying his buildings, I began looking closer at the Sagrada Familia. I found a computer based

Sketch of the interior of the cathedral to which I sketched out along side a picture of the the Sagrada. I then found another sketch of the exterior to which I replicated a section of it. I like the sketches on this artist page however I feel you can see where I have lagged over time and the drawings have gotten slightly messy.

Mood Boards

After starting back at college, we were told to create a mood board to define our primary research into an element which we can use for the rest of our project. I chose landscapes and architecture. For my mood board I photocopied a range of drawings from my sketchbook along with other photocopied images of landscapes from books. I do not like this mood board as I feel it looks basic and not to the best of my ability, therefore I will redo this moodboard.

Dragon fly

Over the summer holiday I have seen many dragonflies, which influenced me to try and draw one. I drew it up close to try and capture the detail of the wings and body, then using water colour to add colour and detail to it. However, I feel adding water colour to the piece ruined the look and made it look messy, therefore if I were to redo it I would use a different media.

Koi.

Whilst on holiday in Mauritus, our hotel had a pond full of koi fish in the reception. This then influenced me to draw them. I used a pencil to draw the outline and detail of the fish, then building up with water colours to add colour. I like the way the fish have turned out but if I had longer I would have drawn them on a water background instead of it being just plain.

Deer.

As I live close to a deer farm and have past it regularly through the summer holidays, I decided to draw the head of a deer. I used an ordinary pencil to achieve this look layering up on different patterns to create slits furry look. I like the outline of this page but if I had longer I would have build up with different medians or a college.

Horses.

For this page I drew a horse in two different positions in two different medians. The first one is created using a black water colour on white paper. The second is created using a white pencil on black paper. My inspiration of this page is a range of photographs and videos I have of my own horse. I like how this page has turned out and I like the silhouette of the horse that has been created however I feel the watercolour piece looks messy.

Big Ben.

For this page I created a 30 minute sketch of Big Ben and its surrounding landscape. I simply used a plain HB pencil to achieve this. My inspiration for this piece was on a trip to London I had over the summer holidays. I like this page however I feel more detail could have been added and it could have been attempted in a different media.

New York.

This is a drawing I drew a while ago of the Manhattan bridge. As I like drawing buildings and city landscapes I drew this a few year ago on A3 paper to add in as much detail as possible. To be able to add this page into my sketchbook, I photocopied the drawing onto A4 paper. I like this page as I like the detailing and shading that has been created.

Daisy.

For this page I used a black ink pen to quickly sketch out a daisy. Whilst out walking I found a bunch of wild Daisy's, which I picked and intended to press to place into my sketchbook. However, this did not work and the Daisy's died so I could not put them in my sketchbook. As I intended to place them around the drawing, I drew the daisy small in the corner, now making the page look bare and boring.

Fossils.

Whilst on the trip to the World Musuem in Liverpool, I collected a range of research on fossils, this being one of them. I used the photographs I took to copy and reposition the fossil. I then traced over my sketch in black ink pen. I like the drawings I have created however the background is boring and needed to be worked on before recreating the fossils.

Headscarf.

Looking at cultures around the world, a large part of many cultures is women wearing headscarfs. As many of my friends where headscarfs I used this as my influence to draw one. The way this headscarf is drawn is a traditional Pakistani way. To create this page I used different coloured acrylic paints. I like this page even though I feel I could have drawn it bigger to fill out the page. I could have also designed a more interesting background.

Teacups.

For this page I looked at British culture and traditions. I chose to draw a stack of teacups as British citizens are stereotyped to be large tea drinkers. To create this I simply drew the outline of traditional teacups using a pencil, creating patterns along some of the cups. I like this page however, unless stated I don't think that this page is obvious to what it is about.

Waterfall.

While on holiday in Mauritius, I went on a boat trip to see a waterfall. This is a quick and rough sketch of that waterfall. I used a HB pencil to draw, highlight and shadow the rocks and water of the scene. I like the look that quickly sketching this has given, however if I were to redo this I would have drawn it bigger to fill out the page.

New York silhouette

After visiting New York in February. I collected a large selection of photographs, many being of skylines of New York. Those photographs then inspired me to draw this. It is a quick 10 minutes ruler drawing of New Yorks silhouette. I then intended to use water to blur the ink down the page however this did not work. Despite that I still do like this page and I feel it is very simple but it very obvious to what it is.

Wasp

Again as wasps are a very common insect especially in my garden, this inspired me to draw them. As they are commonly found around flowers, I drew it being attracted to a flower. This is a quick sketch using a black and white pencil to shade in the different parts of a wasp. I drew the wasp at a close view so you are able to identify all the different sections of the wasp and the detailing of its body. Although I feel the rest of the page is boring and I could have draw the wasp and flower slightly bigger to fill more of the page, I do like the effect that has been created.

Bee

As bees are a very popular insect, especially in my garden, I decided to draw one. For the bee, I used coloured pencils as well as watercolored pencils to shade in its body. Using water colours was not the best idea for this page as the black smudged, leaving the bee to look slightly messy. For the background, I created a honeycomb stencil and used it to print this background onto the black paper using a sponge and paintbrush. Although I do like the effect it has given I feel the background looks messy as the stencil ripped in some places due to being too wet.

Giraffes.

As well as the Zebras, I also collected photographs of Giraffes at Chester Zoo. Instead of drawing them how I saw them, I wanted to draw them in their natural environment. Again I used coloured pencils for this page to give the giraffes a more stick figure, cartoon like look instead of drawing them realistically. I did this to just simply experiment with different styles of sketching. I like the look of this page. I like how the bright colours used for the Giraffes contrast with the darker colours I used for the rest of the piece.

Zebra.

On a visit to chester zoo, I collected a range of photographs, some being of Zebras. As I wanted to do something different to drawing, I used a scalpel to removed the paper where the black stripes would be. I then shaded in the nose, eyes and ears to fill in the parts that I didn't want to crop out. I like the idea of this page and the effect that is has given, however, after I shaded in the nose, I feel it made it look slightly big for the rest of the body.

Robin.

For this page I used a range of coloured pencils to build up this drawing of a robin. I used small and sharp strokes of the pencils to create the feathered look of the bird. I drew this bird as it is a very common bird in England, that has beautifully coloured feathers. I like this drawing as I like the use of different colours and how the way I used the pencils has created this effect.

Birds of Paradise.

Over the summer holidays, I went away to Mauritius where they displayed these flowers. This then influenced me in trying to draw them to capture the bright colours. I again used watercolours on this piece as they give a brighter more pigmented effect then ordinary coloured pencils do. However, I did not give the drawing a wash over with water to blend the colours together. I like this page as I like how the watercolored pencils gives off a bright contrasting feel on the black paper.

Lilies

Over the summer holidays, I received a bunch of orange lilies, which then influenced me to attempt to draw them. I started by sketching out the outline of the lilies, then leading onto colouring them in using watercolored pencils. This is my favourite piece from my sketchbook. I like how I have captured the shapes and colours of the lilies and how well the watercolours blended together.

Parasaurolophus.

This is the last page I created on the dinosaur theme. I liked the form of the Parasaurolophus, therefore i decided to draw it. Again like I did with the T Rex, i wanted to show the dinosaur in its live and skeletal state.  I drew the Parasaurolophus is rough sketches in three different positions, exploring the different ways it moves. I then drew more detailed sketches of the Parasaurolophus's skull in different positions. I like this page however I feel it could have been set out better and have a more creative background.

Stegosaurs

This is another dinosaur I researched whilst at the Liverpool World Museum, which then led me on to drawing the Stegosaurs in its once live state. To create this look I used coloured pencils on black paper to create a bright contrasting look. However, I don't feel the contrasting look was achieved as well as I had intended and I feel the pencils on black paper gave a streaky look.

T. rex

This page consists of a collection of drawings on the T Rex. I tried to uses as many different forms of the dinosaur: using its body form, its skeleton and its skull to build up this page. The body and skeleton drawings of this dinosaur are simple pencil sketches, whereas the skull has been achieved by using a biro and the cross etching technique. Cross etching is a technique that I am not very familiar with using so I decided to experiment. Even though I am not very confident in using this technique it is one of my favourite drawings I have created in this sketchbook.
