1960's Summer Fashion.

This page explores 1960s summer fashion and the styling of clothes they wore. I found photo graphs and old sewing patterns from the 1960s which portray different styles and colours that were popular in this decade. The flower pattern was a popular design therefore i drew two dresses with this on. I chose to draw it on tracing paper to create an interesting effect, showing whatever colour it is placed over, to always create a unique look.

I also looked at vogue as it is a huge fashion magazine. I found a variety of different covers from the 1960s and used these with my book. I like both of these pages as I believe they have a very cute and vintage look to them however, if I were to redo them I would have draw some of the sewing patterns to make the page more interesting and display more of my own work.

Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy

As Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy were models and style icons in the 1960's, I looked at these as they were very popular. I used old photographs from photo shoots and used these to collage images of them both. Even though this page is very basic I like the final outcome of it especially  as all the images are in black and white with just too adding a splash of yellow into the page.

1960's fashion trends.

1. Paco Rabanne - ChainMail.
For this page on Paco Rabanne's Chain Mail style, I used tinfoil circles and layered them in the style of one of his dresses. However, when they are all stuck down on top of each other it looks like one sheet of tinfoil instead of layered circle sheets, so if I could redo this i would experiment with more ways of how I could achieve the layered look. I then used images of Paco Rananne's chainmail dresses I found on interest and used them on this page.

I like Paco Rabannes chain mail style as I think it has a very cool and unique look while it pushes boundaries in fashion.

2. Yves Saint Laurent - Mandain.

For this page I looked at a very popular 1960s design of Yves Saint Laurent's Mandain style. I chose to look at this as I like this design very much and I like how only a suggestion of colour is used to make the design really stand out. I also believe that this style would be very influential to my work as I can paint some of the figurines bikinis on my model in the Mandain style.

For this page I found images online of 1960's models wearing various items of clothing, specifically dresses, in the Mandain style. I then painted a Mandain inspired piece, taken from one of the photographs, around the photographs using gauche paint. Also using gauche paint, I painted an illustration of two women modelling two Mandain dresses. I like this page as I think its colour fun and portrays the design of Mandain well, however, I do think that I should have prepared a background to work on to make it slightly more colourful and engaging.

3. Rudi Gurnriech - Topless Fashion.

For this page I chose to look at Rudi Gurnriech and his style of topless fashion as I found his work rather daring and unique. I like how his designs have no boundaries but instead he pushes them, I feel this is very influential towards my work. For this page I used images of found of his work and collaged them over a black background. I chose to keep this page simple as I have researched further into his work on an artist design sheet. However, I do think this page is very boring and would make it look more engaging if I could.

4. F.C Gundlach - Futuristic.

For this page I looked at F.C Gundlach's work and his portrayal for a monochrome futuristic look. I like Gundlach's work as I think the colour scheme works very well and I love the simple designs he creates. Again, I chose to make this page more basic as I looked further into his work on an artist design sheet, so I collaged images of his work onto a black background to make his black and white photographs stand out.

1960's Swimwear.

For this page on 1960s swimwear designs, I used images I found on Pinterest to help influence my paintings. I used a fashion illustration model template and drew on different designs that I liked the style of from different adverts or old photographs. i then painted them in bright colours using gauche paint. The models portray different designs and colours that were experimented with back in the 1960s. They were then placed on a yellow watercolour background that had been painted using a sponge to create a texture effect. I like this page and the designs of the swimwear used in it, I feel this page with be very influential in my final piece when it comes to painting figurines for my model. However, I would like to repaint the skin of the models as it dried very streaky.

Fairgrounds.

For this page I looked at things you commonly find at beaches, fairgrounds and arcades being one. Therefore, I looked at different amusements, circuses and rides that are often found within these. While I was researching these I found that red and white stripes were a common design within fairgrounds for example: Helter Skelters and circuses. Therefore, I painted different designs of red and white stripes on half of the pages using gauche paint. As carousel horses are also commonly found here, I drew too painting them in pastel colours and used the silhouette once i have cut them out to paint more. I really like the pastel carousel horses as I think they look cute and neat and something I once rode on when on a carousel horse. As rock is a huge thing you would find at the beach I used acrylic and gauche paint to colour different designs. My favourite part of this page is the collage of fairground tickets. I created a stencil for one and used this to cut out a selection of different coloured tickets. I then used a black fine-liner and marker pen to draw on the design.
I really like this page as I feel that everything relates and works together really well. I like the colour scheme used on these pages as they are bright and bold and fun to look at. I would not change anything about this page if I could.

1960'S Beach.

For this page on 1960's beach I found old vintage photographs from Pinterest and used them for this page. I also found old illustrations from Pinterest of beach related things, using acrylic and gauche paints to recreate them. I think the paintings i created look very good and similar to the ones they are meant to be. For the background I used squares of vintage patterns and spread them around the page, collaging the photographs and paintings on top. I like the way this page looks and I would not change anything about it.

Umbrellas and Beach Towels.

For the page on umbrellas I created a stencil of an umbrella shaped and used this to cut different coloured umbrellas, I then randomly placed these around the page and stuck them down to create a collage of multicoloured umbrellas. I then found pictures and paintings of umbrella designs on Pinterest and used these to paint myself, using acrylic and gauche and placed them along side secondary photographs of umbrellas that I also found on Pinterest. I think this page is successful in exploring different umbrella designs and will help me in my final piece when it comes to painting and design them for my model, however, i feel the background of this page makes it look quite busy, therefore, I wish i had have tried other ways to design a background.

For my page on beach towels, I used gauche to paint white and yellow stripes like in the photograph to portray a beach towel. I also used gauche paint to replicate a poster I found on Pinterest of a women sat on a beach towel. I got the skin colour wrong on this painting however, I feel it is very similar to the real illustration. On this page I also used primary photographs where beach towels can be seen and displayed them in a polaroid form which I think makes it look interesting and vintage. As  the beach towels used in the photographs are croquet patchwork, I found an image from Pinterest of a croquet patchwork along with other images go vintage beach towels. For this page I also created samples of croquet squares which I am very proud of as I have never croqueted before. Overall, I am very pleased with this page.

Beach Huts.

For my pages on beach huts, I used gauche to paint stripes for the background like ones used for the beaches huts in the secondary photographs I have used for this page. I then used watercolours to paint different beach huts to use on this page, however the paint looks streaky and messy so I would redo these if I got the chance to. I used scrap fabric to create a small picture of beach huts on a beach. I quite like the way these turned out as I feel like look quite cool and intentionally messy and quick. For this page I also experimented with paper cutting, creating a small stencil of beach huts. This is my favourite piece on the page but if I were to redo it I would either make it slightly bigger or take more care of some parts as small pieces of the paper have ripped and come off. Also if I had the chance to redo it i would take more care painting and leave it longer to dry as some the paints have smudged onto other areas of the page. Overall however, I do like the look of this page.

Primary Research - Primary Photographs.

For my primary research I collected old photographs of my family attending the beach in the 1960s. I asked my grandparents if they had any old photographs from when my parents, aunties and uncles where younger visiting the beach, showing what the beaches where actually like in this decade, along with what was worn. From the photographs I was given I then photocopied them and stuck them to card to make them more durable.

For my first page on primary research I used a large selection of photographs and placed them around the page, pinning them to small pegs and string to display them in an interesting way. This way you can also take the photographs off to see small annotation on the back describing who is in each photo and where the photo was taken. I like this page as I feel it looks interesting and shows a wide range of photographs of what holidays where like in the 1960s. I would not change anything about it.

The photographs on this page are of a yellowy/orange tint as the photographs are continuously exposing.

The second page of my primary research I used more photographs of my parents from when they were children at the beach. As some of these photographs weren't just taken on English beaches but also ones in Belgium and Wales, I used a map for the background to portray travelling. I also used a map to create bunting to again portray travel but in a creative way and bunting was a common decoration in the 1960s. I then used travel tags with secondary pictures of Belgium to show where some of the primary images where taken.
For the second half of this page I used more photographs and placed in on a background of a secondary picture of a pattern used on old towels, that where then used as beach towels for holidays. I then drew a boarder of sandcastles and buckets and spades are these are common things for children to do when they are at the beach.
I like the outcome of these pages as I think they look creative and quite sweet looking, if I were to redo them I would not change anything about them.

For my third page on primary research, I used both primary and secondary images of the beach. I used parcel paper on these pages to layer up and create texture. I then used a mixture of blue, green and white paints to sponge across the pages to create this effect of textured paint. Using different coloured string I tied and knotted each piece together to create a fishing net, as these are commonly found on English beaches and fishing ports. I also used scrap material I found that look liked a pattern from a deckchair, therefore I also used this in the background. I finally used photographs on the page displaying different beaches . Again, I like this page and would not change anything about it as I feel it looks interesting.

Business Card Analysis

Good Business Card Examples.

Example one - I think this is a good example of a business card. I like how the front of it has a simple design relating to the subject she does. I also like how she uses the symbols for Facebook, emails and Instagram next to where she displays her information. This is something I would like to take into my own designs.

Example 2 - I also think that this is a good example of a business card as it is relevant to the subject matter for example photography but portrayed in a fun and creative way. It shows her own work making it a unique business card instead of a mass printed one.The back shows a simple design but also displays all relevant details a business card needs.

Example 3 - I like the design on this business card I think it is creative and works well with the material and colour the card is made of. It also has a lot of details on how to contact the individual. However, this business card does not state what the person is for example a fine artist, illustrator.

Bad Business Card Examples.

Example 1- This is a bad example of a business card design. Even though it has a relevant image and information, they are copied and pasted onto a background with no editing to blend the two together making the card look very unprofessional.

Example 2 - This is another example of a bad business card. The text colour chosen merges into the background too much making it very difficult to read the information on the card. I also feel that the font chosen for this card looks unprofessional compared to the fonts chosen on the better examples.

Example 3 - This is a good and bad example of a business card. It looks very neat and professionally made with all relevant details and a small design. However, it is very obvious it has been designed and made from an online site, showing no personality and creative ideas from the person it belongs to.
