Artist Research.

For my artist research sheets, I focused on 1960s swimwear designers.

The first I looked at was Rudi Gernreich and his movement of topless fashion. I chose to look at his work as I found it creative and daring and rather influential to modern day fashion.  I chose some images of his work from Pinterest and used these to draw from onto fashion illustration models. I chose four of my favourites and drew these using coloured pencil on templates of fashion illustrations  I drew out. Then using a bigger template I drew one of Gernreichs well known pieces, which was modelled by Peggy Moffit, again using coloured pencil. I also found one of Gernreich's own illustrations and used this on my sheet. All of these drawings are presented on a patchwork background using 1960's colours and patterns, which was influenced by one of Rudi Gernreichs pieces displayed on the page. I like this page as it clearly displays his work and I like my drawings of them however I believe I need to go over the models drawings again in a skin toned pencil and it still looks very white.

The second artist I looked at was F.C Gundlach and his Geometric, Space Age style. I chose to look at his work as I liked the simplicity and effectiveness of his collection. Again I used images from online and used these within the page and to help me redraw his designs onto fashion illustration models. These were drawn using a black coloured pencil. I also found one of his own illustrations which i tried to recreate using ink and gauche. The background of this piece is made from gauche and is influenced by the different patterns on F.C Gundlach's work. I like this page as I feel it definitely has a look of his style, however, if I had the chance I would redo the recreation of his illustration as when i built up the colour in the background using ink it appeared a more bright orange rather than a burnt orange I thought it was.

As I have began looking at historical events emphasising on controversy and political protests, I looked at the artist Barbara Kruger. Kruger is an artist that layers existing photographs with pithy and aggressive texts that questions the viewer on classicism, consumerism and the human anatomy and desires. As her work is much to do about power and control, I chose to look at her as I feel this aspect links to the 1960 events I have chosen to research such at the Watts Ghetto Riot and the Vietnam War.
As Kruger uses existing photographs, I have the permission to use photographs taken of myself by Olivia Gray, which I edited to make black and white using photoshop, as the images she uses are also black and white. I then collaged slogans used by Kruger such as 'Ruin yourself, before they do' and 'If you don't control your mind, someone else will'. For these, I simply typed the text into a red text box on word, changing the colour and font type and then using a guillotine to cut out the text in different shapes. I am very pleased with the artist research pages I have produced, I feel they look very professional and that a lot of time and effort have gone into them. These are my favourite artists sheets I have create so far and would not changed anything about them.

Problems faced while creating these artist research pages:
While working on these artist pages I hit many problems with the printer. As I wanted these sheets to consist of two A3 pages, I set the word document to the A3 setting. When it went though to the printer, it however printed A4. I did not realise the format had to be changed on the printer as well before printing. When I sent it to the printer a second time, I changed the sizing to A3 in properties and hit print. This time it printed it onto A3 paper but it cropped out the majority of my work. When I asked how to ensure this would not happen, I was told that the size of the paper must be set to A4 on the word document, but printed on an A3 setting through the printer. On the third time my work was sent to the printer it would not come through to the printing software to be manually put through the printer. After several attempts of trying to get my work to come through to the software, I had to seek help else were. After the software was closed down and rebooted, all the copies I had sent finally came through. After all the excess documents were deleted and the first document I needed came through, the printer alerted me that the toner was running low and needed to be changed. Once the toner cartridge had been shaken as it still had 20% left, the printer then alerted me that there was mislead paper in the draw of paper holding the photography paper I was using. Once the jam had been removed, by second document had to be deleted and resent as I did not know that the printing software does not best work with word files. Finally, after three hours of trying to print, my second document came through. However, instead of being A3 size on A3 paper, it was A4 size on A3 paper. As I had lost all patience with printing the documents to the standard I wanted, I decided the work that had been printed would work just as well. To my benefit, the slogans I printed out fit perfectly to the A4 photographs meaning they would have been too small if they photos had printed out the correct size. So the printing crisis happened to work well on my behalf.
